Jordan Valley Geo-caching is just a GPS away!

STOP! Something I want you to realize before you read on any further is that within a 25 mile radius of where you are standing in East Jordan you’re close to one of over 460 geo-cache locations.  OK, now let me explain a bit about the leisurely silent sport that is sweeping the world with over 750,000 caches, over a million dedicated participants and over two dozen events in Northern Michigan this summer.

Geo-caching (pronounced geo-cashing) is a worldwide game of hiding and seeking treasure.  A geo-cacher can place a geo-cache anywhere in the world, pinpoint its location using GPS (Global Positioning System) technology and then share the geo-cache’s existence and location online at www.geocaching.com or one of several other user group websites.  Even without a GPS you can print coordinates from a computer and utilize the tried and true compass to seek out hidden treasures to have as a keepsake, replace it with one of your own and sign the log book to mark your memory.

You don’t have to be a jock to participate, for geo-caching is for all ages and abilities.  Geo-caching can be a leisurely outing or the events can be quite competitive, and develop corporate adventures for businesses on retreat and group outings for all occasions.  All our tours at Jordan Valley Outfitters can accommodate geo-caching for an awesome silent sport multi-adventure anytime of the year.  It is exciting to watch a guest locate their first cache.  Another aspect of geo-caching is called earth-caching, which pinpoints historical landmarks and natural history locations that allow for discovering ghost towns, geological land formations, shipwrecks, Native American and early settlements.  It’s a great way to get the kids to stop pushing buttons on the Play-station and start doing so with a GPS while exercising amongst the pristine beauty of the Jordan Valley.

I just wanted to email you our address before we packed up for the trek home...and I forgot!  We had such a great time.  George and Nathan were great and the boys loved it.  They can’t wait to try geo-caching when we get home.  We will definitely stop by the next time we are in Michigan for another river trip!

Thanks,

Meredith
